Rumor: Google may be making its own smartphone Rumor: Google may be making its own smartphone

According to a recent report that appeared on a website called The Information, Google's higher-up may be currently debating the possibility of an in-house manufactured smartphone. Normally, I wouldn't pay this much attention to such a rumor, but, as far as I know, the IT giant has already created its own hardware for two projects: Chromebook Pixel and the Pixel C Tablet. Furthermore, I've also heard a few speculations about the fact that the Mountain View-based company may be interested in creating its own processors, so it all seems to add up.

Another good reason why Google would want to make such a move is that currently the IT giant doesn't have any control over its mobile operating system. Having recently demonstrated its Android for Work program, the company is pushing Android to be a more business-friendly OS, but in order for that to happen it needs regular updates and security features which, at the moment, it cannot deliver on its own. Additionally, most of the companies that manufacture Android smartphones have their own apps and generally modify or de-emphasize Google's applications and services, thus making the IT giant lose money. On the other side of the coin, becoming a mobile manufacturer in its own ranks would most likely hurt Google's partnerships with major companies such as Samsung, Nexus, Huawei, etc., as they would effectively become competitors.

The one thing to remember is that at the moment, this is all just speculation as Google is yet to make any official comments on the mater. In case the report turns out to be true, I hope the IT giant has more success with this plan than it currently does with project ARA.
