Fire Phone Announced Fire Phone Announced

Recently, at a press conference in Seattle, Amazon has officially announced its first-ever handset, so let's see whether the first pancake is a blob.

The thing comes with a decent stuffing: a quad-core 2.2GHz processor, Ardeno 330 GPU and 2 GB of RAM. The 4.7-inch display is protected with Gorilla Glass and has a 720p resolution screen that is capable of displaying images in 3D with the help of Dynamic Perspective technology.

On the rear we've got a 13-megapixel camera with an f/2.0 lens, and on the front there are four special cameras to make photos in 3D. The phone comes with unlimited cloud storage for photos and Amazon says that they are going to release an SDK to make Dynamic Perspective technology available for app developers. All these tasty things are wrapped in a rubberized frame and encrusted with aluminum buttons.

One of these buttons gives you direct access to Firefly app. If you've ever used Shazam or SoundHound, or any other music identifying app, you'll get the idea pretty quickly. Firefly is also capable of identifying music but, unlike the above mentioned apps, it can on top of that identify printed text and even movies.

The smartphone runs on Amazon's Fire OS 3.5, a highly customized Android operating system, so the story goes just like with the notorious Nokia X. The owners of the phone won't have access to apps from Google Play, but will be able to get all the 'best' ones (like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Angry Birds etc) through Amazon's app store. At the moment, there are about 155,000 apps available for Fire Phone, but it's quite likely that the store will get frequent updates. So if you don't mind saying goodbye to Google, Fire Phone would be a nice choice at this price tag.

Speaking of which. The phone is available for purchase exclusively through AT&T: $199 for the 32GB version and $299 for the 64GB. Or you may purchase the Fire Phone directly from Amazon, which will set you back at $649 for 32GB and $749 for 64GB.  If you are interested, check it out on AT&T website to see more purchase options.
