Google Now on Tap adds barcode scanning capabilities Google Now on Tap adds barcode scanning capabilities

I've got some good news for those who own a phone powered by Android Marshmallow or Android Nougat. Google Now on Tap has just been updated and now it provides some badly needed features such as barcode scanning capabilities, the ability to offer the in-app translations and the improved research functionality. The update is rolling out as we speak and should shortly become available to every user with the Internet connection.

In case you're curious, here's a short rundown of the new features:

  • Translate text from any screen - as the name indicates, this feature will allow you to easily translate the text from any app. The function only works on phones that have English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese or Russian set as the default language. All you have to do to access this functionality is to long press the Home button and you can even translate multiple languages at once.
  • Search by Image - this function now includes barcode and QR code scanning capabilities, which means that comparison shopping will become a lot easier.
  • Discover - lastly, this feature adds a Discover icon to your screen, which will give you an easy way to research the current content of your display. When you tap the button, you will be provided with a stream of related videos, news, etc.
