Google Wants to be Your Mobile Carrier Google Wants to be Your Mobile Carrier

Being an Internet and TV service provider is surely not enough for Google as the megacorp wants you to use its native network to make phone calls as well. Starting today, the company that once used to be just a search engine, launches the first wave of invites for testing its Project Fi service. The service will be available only in the US after the official launch and exclusively with Nexus 6, but let's have a closer look at what to expect from the new player.

Fi is a carrier that will allow you to use VOIP communication and select between T-Mobile and Sprint coverage when no Wi-Fi is available. The monthly subscription plan costs $20 and includes unlimited domestic calls and worldwide text messaging. You also pay $10 for each gigabyte of traffic and if you go over or below the plan, the difference is reimbursed the next month. International calls are subject to per-minute fee which depends on the country, however, all calls to US numbers are free. So if you call to the US from a Wi-Fi hotspot, say, in Japan, the call will be free of charge.

The service is not available at the moment, but Google promises to launch it the next week. Oh, and if you wish to be one of the first to try it out, you can sign up here. For more information about data plans and other features, visit the official website.
